City of Toronto Archives, detail of plate 1977 – 96

This is what the place looked like from the sky back in 1977. The intersection it question is sort of at the middle of the image… though, in a way, it doesn’t exist yet in this shot. The line running up the middle of the image was called, at the time, Indian Line Road, and it also served as the border been the City of Mississauga in Peel Region on the left, and the City of Etobicoke in Metropolitan Toronto on the right. Oddly enough, it’s Malton there in Mississauga that’s all built up, not the Rexdale side in Metro, which was still farmland.
This shot is a detail from an aerial photo at the City of Toronto Archives.

The City Hall of Toronto, Ontario, Canada is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city. Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell (with Heikki Castrén, Bengt Lundsten, Seppo Valjus), landscape architect Richard Strong, and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, the building opened in 1965; its modernist architecture still impresses today. It was built to replace Old City Hall, which was built in 1899.
The building is on a large site on the north side of Queen Street West between Bay Street and Osgoode Hall. The address is 100 Queen Street West, and its postal code is M5H 2N2. It is on the site of the Ward, which was a major immigrant reception area during the first half of the twentieth century, characterized by its slums, as well as Toronto’s first Chinatown after the Second World War. The population of the large area was displaced, mostly to the northwest of the site. Much of the Chinese population residing in the district had to be relocated before construction of the new City Hall could begin.
A few streets were cut off, namely Elizabeth and Chestnut Streets at Queen Street.

Overlooking the City of Montreal and the Magnificent Victoria Bridge, Canada

Image Title: Overlooking the City of Montreal and the Magnificent Victoria Bridge, Canada
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Population, 618,500. Montreal has a wonder situation. It is a thousand miles from the Atlantic and is on a great navigable river which is the outlet of the Great Lakes. But for one handicap is ice, for from the middle of December to near the end of April the river is frozen. The Ottawa River encircles the city, and logs are drifted down that river from the forested areas to the north-west.
Montreal is now the metropolis of Canada, an important railway center, and the terminus of many steamship lines. Large harvests of wheat come to Montreal from the West, in part by way of the Great Lakes and in part by rail. Lumber and wood pulp are made of the logs that are sent down the Ottawa River. The grain coming into the city has led to the establishment of flour mills and breweries. The route to the south through Lake Champlain and the Hudson valley to New York City is only 420 miles long. Large trans-Atlantic vessels bring European goods directly to Montreal and take away the raw materials which Canada sends to the Old World."
